Applications include domestic driveways, parking areas and sidewalks, subject to appropriate pavement design and project requirements. Product selection and installation should follow the manufacturer’s guidance, with the supporting pavement construction designed for the intended traffic and ground conditions.

  1. Preparation: Inspect blocks for defects and consistent colour and texture. Wear appropriate PPE throughout installation.
  2. Excavation: Allow for the sub-base, sand laying course and blocks. Keep the finished surface at least 150 mm below the damp-proof course.
  3. Edge restraints: Install before the sub-base. Consider intermediate restraints on gradients steeper than 1:20.
  4. Sub-base: Use well-graded aggregate (40 mm ballast to dust), compacted in layers no thicker than 75 mm. Provide minimum drainage falls of 1.25% longitudinally and 2.5% crosswise.
  5. Laying course: Use uniformly moist, well-graded grit sand, compacted to 30 mm. Establish levels in the sub-base rather than adjusting the sand depth.
  6. Laying and cutting: Maintain straight alignment and 2–5 mm joints. Start at the lowest point on slopes. Use full blocks where possible and avoid cuts smaller than one-quarter of a block.
  7. Pattern: Use herringbone for high-traffic areas and stretcher bond for light traffic. Avoid basket weave in vehicle areas.
  8. Jointing and compaction: Fill joints with dry jointing sand before using a plate vibrator to prevent edge damage. Top up joints as needed.
  9. Weather: Do not lay on saturated sand. Complete joint filling in dry conditions and protect exposed materials from adverse weather.
